Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content - such as text, images, audio, video, or code - instead of only analyzing or sorting existing data.

What Generative AI means

Generative AI learns patterns from huge amounts of examples, then uses those patterns to produce something new. Ask it for a poem, a logo, or a summary, and it generates an original result rather than copying one from a list.

A familiar example is asking a tool like ChatGPT to write a birthday message: it does not pull a saved message from storage - it builds a fresh one word by word, based on everything it learned about how messages like that are written.

Why Generative AI matters

Generative AI is the engine behind most of today's practical AI tools, so understanding it makes everything else easier to learn. It is what lets non-technical people produce content and automate creative work.

It powers text, image, and audio tools you can use without coding
It lets one person produce work that once needed a whole team
Most AI agents rely on generative models to do their thinking
Working confidently with these tools is fast becoming an essential skill

Frequently asked questions

Tools like ChatGPT and Claude for text, and image generators that create pictures from a description, are all generative AI. They each produce new content rather than retrieving existing files.
