System Prompt

A system prompt is a behind-the-scenes instruction that sets an AI's role, tone, and rules for an entire conversation, rather than for a single message.

What System Prompt means

There are two layers of instruction when working with AI. Regular prompts are the individual messages you send. The system prompt sits above them, defining the AI's overall role and behavior for the whole conversation.

For example, a customer-support chatbot might have a system prompt that says: "You are a friendly support agent for an online store. Be concise, never discuss competitors, and escalate refunds to a human." Every reply then follows those rules.

Why System Prompt matters

The system prompt is how you give an AI tool a consistent personality and reliable boundaries. It is essential for building chatbots and agents that behave the way you intend.

It keeps an AI's tone and role consistent across a conversation
It sets rules and limits so an AI stays on task
It is a key step in building any custom chatbot or agent
Knowing it helps you design AI tools that behave predictably

Frequently asked questions

A normal prompt is a single request within a chat. A system prompt sets the overall rules and personality for the whole conversation, shaping how the AI responds to every message.
