Embedding

An embedding is a way of turning text or other data into a list of numbers that captures its meaning, so AI can measure how similar two pieces of content are.

What Embedding means

Computers work with numbers, not words. An embedding converts a piece of text into a list of numbers arranged so that similar meanings end up close together - even if the original wording is completely different.

For example, the phrases "how do I reset my password" and "I forgot my login details" use different words but mean nearly the same thing. Their embeddings would be very close, letting AI recognize them as related.

Why Embedding matters

Embeddings are the quiet engine behind AI search and tools like RAG. Knowing the concept helps you understand how AI finds relevant information.

Embeddings power search by meaning, not just keywords
They are essential to how RAG finds the right documents
They let AI group and match content intelligently
Knowing the concept helps you build smarter AI tools

Frequently asked questions

Embeddings let AI tools search by meaning. They are stored in a vector database so the system can quickly find the content most related to a question, even with different wording.
