Structured Output

Structured output is AI responses returned in a fixed, organized format so that other software can read and use them reliably.

What Structured Output means

By default, AI replies in free-flowing sentences, which people read easily but software cannot. Structured output asks the AI to respond in a consistent, organized format with clearly labeled fields instead.

For example, instead of a paragraph describing a customer enquiry, you ask the AI to return labeled fields like name, topic, and urgency. Your automation can then reliably pick out each value and act on it.

Why Structured Output matters

Structured output is what lets AI plug cleanly into automated workflows. It is the practical bridge between an AI's answer and the next step in your system.

It lets automations use AI results without guesswork
It makes multi-step AI workflows far more reliable
It is essential when AI output feeds into other apps
Knowing it helps you build automations that do not break

Frequently asked questions

You ask for it in your prompt - specifying the exact format and fields you want. Many AI tools and no-code platforms also have built-in settings to enforce a structured response.
